Our Mission
The Brookdale Foundation Group consists of the Brookdale Foundation, Glendale Foundation, and Ramapo Trust. All three were endowed by the Schwartz family and all share a common outlook and purpose: to enhance the quality of life of America’s elderly.
Major Initiatives
We issue requests for proposals (RFPs) three times a year for our major initiatives:
- The National Group Respite Program supports community-based efforts to develop and sustain social model group respite and early memory loss programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
- The Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) promotes the creation or expansion of services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting.
- The Brookdale Leadership in Aging Fellowship Program encourages and supports emerging leaders in the field of aging. We seek applications from a broad range of disciplines including, but not limited to, the medical, biological, and basic sciences, nursing, social sciences, and arts & humanities.

Local, Regional and State Initiatives - Year 2011
We are pleased to announce the Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) Local, Regional and State Seed Grant Initiatives for the year 2011. The deadline for the submission of local and regional proposals is Thursday, December 2, 2010; the deadline for state proposals is Thursday, January 6, 2011. Selected applicants will be notified in April and be required to attend our National Orientation and Training Conference to be held April 29 – May 1, 2011 in Denver, Colorado.

- Duke University for the creation of the Brookdale-Duke Geriatrics Faculty Development Academy ($100,000)
- Doctors Without Borders, USA in support of their work in Haiti ($10,000)
- Mount Sinai School of Medicine to support the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and the National Palliative Care Research Center and the Center to Advance Palliative Care ($10,000,000)
- Naples Community Hospital to create a Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging ($2,500,000)
- Food banks, pantries, and community organizations to provide emergency services to low-income clients ($300,000)
- The International Longevity Center to research and produce a report identifying solutions recommended by family caregivers to ameliorate the emotional, physical, and other effects of caregiving ($210,000)
- Prostate Cancer Foundation to sponsor a "Young Investigator Award" ($225,000)
- New York University College of Nursing to provide scholarships for students specializing in Geriatrics in the new NYU College of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program ($300,000)
- Shelter for Abused Women & Children to support an Elder Abuse Response initiative. ($150,000)
